Two of our existing webcams (shown below) at Falmouth and Praa Sands. Both of these webcams are externally mounted in their heavy duty cases on buildings in fairly exposed positions.

Internet Webcams

Increasingly on the Internet people are making use of webcams. The specific application for a webcam can vary from displaying the view from a hotel window, or a beach to see surf conditions, to a nice view of a town centre to help promote the town or even overlooking a building site so directors can watch construction progress away from the site.

The technology used in webcams has advanced significantly in the last few years. Whilst some webcams plug into a computer and have software on the computer that uploads images to the Internet, the advent of IP cams ,with built in servers enabling the camera to upload direct to the Internet through an Internet connection has made the process much more reliable, and whether cabled or wireless, the possibilies are endless...

IP webcam

There are three basic types of webcam:

Serial webcams

Connect to your pc via a serial cable and then software is loaded onto your pc which controls the picture taking and image upload.

Standalone Network Cameras (IP webcams)

Have a built in server and can upload direct to the Internet through an Internet connection. They can be cabled and connect through a network to the Internet or a wireless option can be used in conjunction with a wireless access point. The camera is configured through your Internet browser at the camera's IP address.

'Pan, tilt, zoom' webcams

Also are available are 'pan tilt zoom' webcams, which reside in a domed enclosure and posess all the properties of an IP webcam, but with the added feature that people looking at the webcam page on the Internet can pan the webcam, tilt it, or zoom in remotely.

The cameras themselves are not built for exterior use, but custom built exterior cases with heavy duty mounting brackets are available together with suitable cabling.

Image quality

Image quality is dependent on the type of camera you use.

The two versions generally available are:

Standard (640x480) (suitable for mot 'scenic' situations)

Megapixel (1280x960) (for more detailed observation)

The Falmouth Webcam

This webcam has been live for around 5 years now. It is an older style serial camera controlled by software on the pc. Image quality is 640x480 pixels.

This camera was originally installed to help promote the town of Falmouth and its harbour.

Feedback received shows it is viewed by those who have moved or live away as a window on home, by sailors to see what the weather is like, and even by Ferry companies watching the maintenance progress on their ferries as they come into the docks and out again.

The Praa Sands webcam

This webcam went live in early November 2004. It is a modern IP camera, connected by network cable directly to the internet via an adsl router. Image quality is also 640x480 pixels.

Its purpose is to show the view and location of Chris Old's Clipper Restaurant, assisting in promotion of restaurant, and to give surfers and holiday makers a way to check the conditions before travelling to Praa Sands.
